Current accounts in international format calculator. The National Bank launched the Internet service "IBAN Calculator" (updated)

  • 07.01.2024

This is the very first and most important stage of verification that we perform.
Verification characters include two characters located in positions 3 and 4 in the IBAN.
The characters are calculated based on the MOD97 algorithm, and allow a first check of the correctness of the IBAN number.
This verification is supported in all 116 countries.

If an error occurs at this stage, we do not carry out further checks because The IBAN is obviously incorrect.

IBAN support in the country

Our system automatically checks whether it is possible to use an IBAN in the country specified in the code.
If an error occurs, the user will see a message stating that the IBAN is not used in the country.

This can only happen if you are using low quality software.

IBAN length

Checking the length of the IBAN code is the third step in checking the code you entered.
Each of the 116 countries has its own IBAN code length.

Possible test results:

IBAN length is correct for UK
In the country ***COUNTRY*** IBAN includes **N** characters

If the International Bank Account Number is different, it is considered incorrect.

Account Number Checksum (BBAN)

Any IBAN code includes an internal BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number) account number.
Some countries use additional characters to verify that the BBAN is correct.
Each country uses its own algorithm, and it may differ even for different bank branches.

  • Great Britain (UK) uses 3 different algorithms: MOD10, MOD11 and DBLAL with 39 indicators. Thus, we have more than 100 variations
  • Holland (NL) uses the MOD11 algorithm with various parameters to verify the account number. France (FR) uses MOD97 with various parameters
  • Germany (DE) uses a complex structure based on 143 algorithms and parameters: MOD10, MOD11, MOD7, etc.
  • Italy (IT) uses a modified MOD10 algorithm to check domestic bank accounts
  • Sweden (SE) uses 5 different algorithms: MOD11 and MOD10 with different parameters
After all verification steps have been completed, the system will send one of the following results:

Correct account number checksum- You can use the number as it is correct.

Invalid account number checksum- You cannot use the number. Most likely it contains an error.

Account number does not support verification- Many countries and banks do not support account number verification. In this case, you should use verification characters to evaluate the IBAN.

Currently, 48 countries support BBAN and internal account number verification using verification characters.

IBAN format and structure

In the second step, we check the structure of the International Bank Account Number.
We know all the rules and requirements in each country that govern the use of IBAN.
This check may be useful if the country you select does not use verification characters.

This check may have the following results:

Correct IBAN format and structure!

Incorrect IBAN format and structure!

Formatting

Our algorithm allows you to determine IBAN formats in all 116 countries.

When checking the number format we take into account:

  • Bank code position- allows you to determine the correct location of the bank identifier
  • Branch code position- The branch code is not used in all countries. We check for 58 countries
  • Position of test characters- Not used in all countries. We check for 58 countries
Structure

Structure checking involves checking the placement of special characters in different parts of the IBAN.
The framework is tested for 116 countries.

During the structure check we determine:

  • The bank code contains only letters, only numbers, letters and numbers
  • Branch code contains only letters, only numbers, letters and numbers
  • The internal account number contains only letters, only numbers, letters and numbers

IBAN is an international bank account number. It is used in more than 70 countries around the world, and from July 4 it will be used in Belarus. It will consist of 28 characters - letters and numbers. And they will assign it to every account in a Belarusian bank and any other financial institution.

What is IBAN, why are we switching to it and what do ordinary citizens need to know? Komsomolskaya Pravda understood the nuances.

Why are we switching to IBAN?

Important: absolutely all accounts opened in Belarus are assigned an IBAN account number!

Banks in the European Union have been using IBAN since January 1, 2007, primarily for ease of settlement. If the client has an IBAN number, it means that the system can easily identify him, there are fewer operational risks, payment processing will be faster and without charging a commission.

Roughly speaking, now a Belarusian, in order to send a transfer to Germany, needs to pay a commission, and the money can take a week or a month. Having an IBAN number will make this much easier. The reverse process will also be simplified - a client from Germany will transfer money to a Belarusian partner faster if he provides the IBAN number assigned to his bank account.

From July 4, when transferring money both abroad and within the country, an account number in IBAN format will be required. The sender needs this number to transfer money.

How is the IBAN number different from the old account number?

The old bank number has 13 digits. New - 28. These are letters and numbers. They will look, for example, like this: BY13 NBRB 3600 9000 0000 2Z00 AB00.

How to find out your number IBAN?

Contact the bank. Some banks provide information about the new account format to customers via online banking or mobile banking.

You can also make a request for your new number through the service on the National Bank website. To do this, go to the “Payment system” section and select the “Switch to IBAN and BIC” tab. Next, select the name of the bank, account currency and enter the 13-digit number of your account. Click “Get” - and the system will show your new number in IBAN format.

Do I need to tell someone my new account number?

If you receive a salary, pension, scholarship, etc. on a bank card, then you do not need to provide a new number in IBAN format. Senders of money (employers, universities) will receive information about the new number from the bank themselves. But if you work under a contract, the employer will need to provide this new 28-digit number. It will also need to be communicated to the company or person who wants to send you money from abroad.

By the way, if enforcement proceedings have been initiated based on your application, then you should tell the enforcement authority about the new account number. This is necessary, for example, if you receive alimony.

How can I pay for the Internet, utilities and telephone now?

If you have constantly made payments through ERIP, Internet banking, mobile banking, then nothing will change for you - all recipient details will change automatically.

But if you made one-time payments and payments using bank details, you will have to manually enter the recipient’s account in the new IBAN format. That is, you need to make a payment, indicating new details (28-digit code), and save it.

In accordance with the Resolution of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus dated July 27, 2015. No. 440 “On the structure of the account number”, from July 4, 2017, customer accounts opened in banks will change in the Republic of Belarus.

The downside of international transfers with your bank

When you send or receive an international wire with your bank, you might lose money on a bad exchange rate and pay hidden fees as a result.
